5 Things You Did Not Know About Snapchat: Chapter 7

     Hey guys,

Oh here we go with Snapchat now. I remember when this app had just launched recently after I had just acquired my first iPhone in the eighth grade. Back then, the app featured just ten second still pictures that you could send to your friends, this was way before stories, their form of TikTok (whatever that is called), and what most of us know as "snap maps".

Snapchat is a mobile camera app on which people or brands can send photos or videos called snaps to send to their friends or followers. A snap opened by a follower or friend is only available for a set time limit from one to ten seconds, however the snapchat stories feature has allowed users to add snaps to their stories, which are available for 24 hours.

Well the first thing you probably didn't know about Snapchat is that like many other successful social media platforms, it was founded on a college campus. It was at Stanford University where Reggie Brown, Evan Spiegel, and Bobby Murphy first had the idea to create an app with disappearing pictures.

The next thing you also probably did not know about Snapchat is that it was originally called "Picaboo" and was launched in July 2011. Since these beginnings, the app has reached over 363 million people users daily, and over 750 million monthly to create over four billion snaps a day.

Another interesting statistic, is that while you would think that since the United States culture has become so influenced by this app that it would be the number one country by audience size, however that is India. United States comes in at second for this statistic and really shows how many implications this app has for all cultures around the world.

A great piece of information for marketers and those in the business world is that Snapchat's advertising has become very effective, which recieve twice the visual attention of Facebook ads, 1.5 more times than Instagram, and are 1.3 times more effective than Youtube.

Recently, Snapchat has continuously been innovating and  adding cool features such as its visual search function. This function allows you to simply point your camera at a product or barcode to find and purchase the product on Amazon. This feature also brings in a new revenue stream for both Snapchat and Amazon.

I hope you learned a little something about Snapchat.
